A medical incident during a stay abroad can be unsettling – especially if the local healthcare system is still new. International students, scholarship holders and visiting academics in Germany are often faced with questions in the event of illness: Where do I turn? Who covers the costs? And what benefits does health insurance cover? With a suitable tariff from IHC Company S.A., this situation can be mastered safely and well organized.
First symptoms: Observe and visit a pharmacy if necessary
For mild symptoms – such as a cold, headache or gastrointestinal problems – it is often sufficient to take it easy and use medication from the pharmacy. Pharmacies in Germany offer expert initial advice and over-the-counter preparations to alleviate symptoms.
Seeing a doctor: when, where and how?
If the symptoms worsen or do not improve within a few days, it is advisable to see a doctor. Appointments can be easily arranged online via platforms such as Doctolib or Jameda. Many doctors also offer video consultations and advice in foreign languages.
As part of its tariffs, IHC Company S.A. allows free choice of doctor for all practices that bill privately. This gives you a high degree of flexibility in your choice of medical providers.
Treatment costs:
IHC Company S.A. offers health insurance tariffs specially tailored to international students, scholarship holders and visiting academics. In the event of illness, billing is usually as follows:
- treatment and payment: After the visit to the doctor, insured persons receive an invoice, which they initially pay themselves.
- submission of documents: The paid invoice is submitted digitally to IHC Company S.A. together with proof of payment. Important: With FlexMed, invoices and documents are submitted via the AXA Customer Online Portal
- reimbursement: After verification, reimbursement is made in accordance with the conditions of the selected plan. Important: With FlexMed, reimbursement is made directly by AXA.
Note: To ensure rapid processing, the invoices submitted should contain the following information:
- Name of the person treated
- Date of treatment
- Diagnosis
- Detailed description of services
Pharmacy receipts for medically prescribed medication can also be submitted for reimbursement.
Behavior in an emergency
In acute medical emergencies (e.g. accidents or sudden severe pain), the following applies
- Emergency number 112 for ambulance and first aid
- 116 117 for the medical on-call service outside regular consultation hours
- Direct visit to the emergency room in the nearest hospital
- Emergency treatment is generally reimbursed in full under the IHC tariffs, provided it is medically necessary.
